outside the snow is falling and friends are calling woo hooo

after a swell seven day trek to minnesota, we are home. we woke up early this morning in order to make it through the snowy motherland in time for mike to talk with some airplanes. here are some highlights and lowlights of the trip:

+ seeing our santa lucia...she has developed so much personality in the three months since we've seen her!

+ our triumphant return to Morris after nearly a year's absence

+ sledding, albeit on an icy hill rather than a fluffy wonderland

+ seeing rocky, karkar, 3 of 5 parents and 3 of 5 grandparents

+ eating delicious meals and Christmas treats

- eating too much of the delicious meals and Christmas treats

+ the addition of a sheep dog and 2 new miniature horses to the live nativity on Christmas Eve

+ Lefse!

- the strawberry rhubarb wine my mom received from a customer. i did not have high expectations and was still surprised by my inability to imbibe it.

+ a new cut and color courtesy of londa kay

on a separate note, has anyone seen the infomercial for mighty putty? i want it! my birthday is coming up in february if anyone is stumped on a gift for me...

cheers!

happy new year indeed

2007 was rung in with me in pajamas, sitting in my living room with my mikel and my folks, and though this is a very enjoyable way to spend one's time, 2008's festivities kicked 2007's ass.

We were invited by a one, Andrew Christenson and a one, Nolan Pannek to rock in the new year atop a Chicago condominium. I traded in my pajamas for my Christmas dress and a pair of heels. Mike wore his "Turtle Racing Champion" shirt under a nice striped pullover (no it's a cardigan, but thanks for noticing). The night's activities included beer pong, delicious appetizers, drinks galore and (drum roll) Karaoke! Needless to say, I'm a bit hoarse today. Unfortunately, there was no Neil Diamond featured, yet it was still a fantastic time. The promised fireworks to be viewed from the rooftop at the new year were diminished due to snowfall. However, the snow was beautiful and added an extra something to the night, and the skyline was still beautiful sans fireworks.

Post party was spent at a hole in the wall dinner a block west of Andy and Nolan's where the specialty is a "slinger." One receives a certificate for completing this beast of a meal. Mike attempted and left with no certificate in hand. It is comprised of a large mound of hash browns, covered with two sausage patties, two eggs, sunny side up and coated in chili. yum. Fun at the diner increased when two chicks and a dude entered in their skivvies to give the cooks a beer and scamper out.

The night came to a close with a slumber party in the living room with a huge great dane named Ernie, the pup of Annie and Tyler ________ who also attended school in GF. He was nothing short of awesome.

New Years Day was spent in the perfect way, Mike and I watching football and chowing down on 40 cent wings from BWWs. The weekend was a huge success right up until my adoring husband said to me, "you know, before we were married, I never knew where the term "bitch slap" came from." It's gonna be a happy 2008 at the Headrick household.

Laughter and Love to you and yours in the New Year...
Cheers!

o christmas tree

My finals are complete and I feel like a million hershey kisses (which, let's face it must feel pretty fantastic being that they are so delicious and perfectly packaged)! At one point in my life I carried a small bag of hershey's kisses around with me in my purse. I then left them as part of the server's tip when dining out. I figured if i were a waitress "working hard for the money" I would enjoy a chocolate treat. I have no proof if a server actually ever enjoyed the kiss, only the sweet memory in my heart that I gave her/him the option.

I have been enjoying a lot of the vince guaraldi trio in preparation for Christmas. Mike and I finally got our tree up and I'm feeling festive. I ordered our Christmas cards this afternoon and am contemplating whether or not the headricks were note worthy enough in the past year to merit a "Christmas letter." If you would like to receive said Christmas card/potential letter, please send me your address. I am looking forward to wrapping presents and spending a week in Minnesota with family, friends and little lulu.

cheers!

let it snow!

Today was the first snow of the Illinois year! Though we enjoyed the first snow of the winter over Thanksgiving in Minot, today was the first at "home." It started off really pretty and fluffy, but after 5 hours of downpour, it has now turned into a blustery sleety, slushy mess. That is not to say I am not still enjoying some winter weather. It almost makes me miss Grand Forks.

In other news, I am 2 weeks away from completing my semester. I am also 2.5/4 for completed projects/papers. And after a thoroughly stressed out week, things are looking up.

the week in review

for rita, who thought i died ;0)

Turkey Day/5 days in ND was good, in so much as a 5 day binge with Mike's family is good.
Highlights: The food, spending time with Megan and Alex, completing my Christmas shopping, completing the last two books on my semester reading list, first snowfall of the year, minimal mentioning of me as a "damn liberal."

Lowlights: Mike abandoning me for three days to go hunting, not seeing my family, the knowledge of the papers and projects i need to complete in the next two weeks (make that one week)

and to write this i have procrastinated further and i must return to a very stimulating discussion on paul's true meaning of romans vs luther's interpretation. I have already made arrangements to have copies bound on delivered to your doors before Christmas, knowing the demand for this literature would be immense.

this morning i was being very exciting and emptying out my dishwasher. I was putting away my wine glasses and one started to slip. i tried to catch it. it broke and sliced open my pinky finger. it hurts.

9:59

I have had a blustery day and it's only 10 a.m.

It began with a quick stop at the dunken doghnuts to pick up some treats for my 8 o'clock. There a man decided I looked h.o.t. in my bandanna and short short pigtails and asked for my number. He worked at Stanly Steamer. A+ start of the day.

My review Jepordy team came from behind to win! A++

I then had to go to the gyno for a "six month checkup." read: give me more money or in my case, give me more birth control (no babies no babies). On the phone the nurse explained they would ask me some questions and do a routine breast exam. However, when I arrived at the office they informed me I needed to have a pelvic exam. Now for any boys who may be slightly uncomfortable now, I apologize, but I would like to take this time to inform you of the uncomfort this causes a woman. A shifty eyed doctor who will not look you squarly in the face is then digging about in your undercarriage, pass. Additionally, a bi-yearly exam is completely uncessesary, and let me tell you, my assertive side came out and those nurses and doctor heard about it. I was a borderline bitch, but I feel justified in my bitchiness.

That said, now it is time for a run.

cheers!

2nd annual screwdrivers and muffins

It was Sunday and everything was going perfectly. The guests had arrived, the muffins were delicious, the screwdrivers were flowing like wine, and the waffles saved me from an early white flag. and then, it happened: ring, ring. I look down at my phone and noticed it was the David's Bridal. I chose not to answer in the event someone had called in sick and they needed me to fill in. I waited for the voicemail to sound and nervously checked the message which was, visa vis, the following: "Hi Chelsey, it's Jennifer from David's Bridal, just wondering if you were on your way or if you were planning on coming in today. Call me back as soon as you can." I believe my exact phrase was, (pardon my french) "Oh fuck."

I will now take the time to inform you that I was not on the schedule. I had worked the previous weekend and I double checked and I was not on the schedule. A debate ensued and we decided I should call and tell the truth rather than make up a tale about being out of town. I felt like an alcoholic having to tell my boss I was half in the bag on a Sunday morning and it would be a couple hours before I could come in while i sobered up. I then silently hoped that they would tell me I didn't have to come in, being they had switched the schedule without telling me an all, but life is not that kind. So while others partied on and Mike dominated the Blazing Buffalo wing challenge at BWW, I shuttled dresses and cursed David's Bridal for ruining my life. I have high hopes for the third annual Screwdrivers and Muffins Extravaganza and thoroughly look forward to waving the white flag in David's face.

Dan, in real life

This is exactly a week late. nonetheless:

7 days ago today, I enjoyed a fabulous Minnesota weekend. Here's the pro/con breakdown

PRO: H made me a great, nay, STELLAR "toyota crusing mix" including "indian outlaw," arguably the most degrading song i have ever loved.

CON: the toyota declines to play cds at high speeds, ergo i could not enjoy said mix. mazada of naperville has no explaination. mrrr.

PRO: an excellent visit with the Veenendaals which culminated with them taking me out to dinner at the Park Tavern.

CON: The waitress brought me the wrong order. i ordered the "pepper chicken" which supposedly came with green peppers and pepperjack cheese. When I mentioned the mistake to the waitress she insisted that i had ordered the "lemon pepper chicken." I then looked down at my plate and saw a fried breaded chicken sandwich coated with black pepper. hmmm

PRO: the tator tots were EXCELLENT.

PRO: The film "Dan in real life" which i saw with Dan, in real life. It is basically a better version of the Family Stone. Highly reccomended.

PRO: seeing rachel lee mattson and her family at her cousin's wedding

CON: The Wedding Song - death to anyone who has this at their wedding.

PRO: Kim Mattson gets engaged to Bob. Happiness ensues

PRO: The mashed potatos at the reception

CON: Gary Mattson threw out his back and was therefore unavailiable to polka

PRO: cutting a rug with Rock

PRO: open bar.

PRO: our sightseeing tour of Minneapolis, including the site of the 35W bridge collapse, which was sad, but also important to see, so it stays in the Pro category.

CON: leaving my phone in the back of the mattson's car and driving 6 hours home with no one to talk to :(

Final grade: A- The minus of course for lack of Polka

t.t.h.

Recently, I was very pleased to notice that my tator tot hotdish (t.t.h.) was thought to be delicious enough to include in my "signature dish" roll-a-dex. I was however, displeased to realize i had not been sharing my "gifts" with anyone beyond Mike. In short, I had not made the tasty dish for heather and sam, despite many diner opportunities in which enchiladas were repeatedly served. i had incorrectly placed t.t.h. below enchiladas on the delicous dinner party dishes scale without realizeing h's love for t.t.h. this was remedied tonight.

in a slightly odd move, i cooked for them at their home. odd or perhaps very luxurious, depending on your view of it. not to sound too vain, but this was hands down the most tasty t.t.h. i have ever crafted. if paul and jim had been present, they would have been fighting with sam for seconds. so there it is, i probably think this song is about me.

the secret, i believe, to the extra scrumptiousness of tonight's t.t.h. was the colby jack cheese. i had previously used cheddar. this was a mistake i will not soon repeat.

all are invited to the chi area for the new and improved t.t.h.
enchiladas may have been replaced forever.

This morning my Tuesday/Thursday 8 am class was to start. I woke up and groggily drove (and by drove i mean sped) and ran to my class. It turns out this is an education class, and as i will not be teaching chillins anytime soon, i'm probably out of my element. What of it? Despite my desparate dash to class, the intructor didn't show. i am not a happy camper.

For Jim

i dedicate my first blog to a one, Jim Hammen, who's blog i stalk to the point where he has told me to start my own (parital dedication to h, who also has a hilarious blog). it most likely will not be as witty, but those who read it (hi rock, hi h) will have to deal.

in case you were wondering, i entitled my blog "life of chike,"mike's and my celebrity name, as this blog will inevitably mention mike more than once, though i'm positive he will never contribute. it may change if i think of something better, suggestions are welcomed and encouraged.

that said, the only noteworthy event in my life recently was the ditching of the beetle in favor of a toyota solara. so far it is love, despite the fact that on my drive to school this morning i discovered the rear defrosters do not work. mazda of naperville shall be getting a call later this afternoon.

i just discovered that, though powered by google, this blog does not include a spell check, which as you know, is a dire situation for me. i know you two ladies will be silently correcting me and shaking your heads constantly. sorry.

and now, it is time to study for midterms. i.hate.school
